Stop Guessing, Start Seeing: How I Finally Fixed My Golf Swing with Instant Replay
We've all been there. You hit a shot that slices into the trees, and you think "What did I do wrong?" Your buddy says your takeaway was off. The YouTube video you watched last night says to check your hip rotation. But honestly? You have no idea what actually happened.
That's exactly where I was until I decided to build a solution myself.
I created an app called DelayCam to help athletes (golfers, dancers, fitness enthusiasts, anyone who needs to see their form) get instant visual feedback during practice. And I wanted to share it with this community because it's been incredibly useful for my own golf game.
The Problem with Traditional Swing Feedback
Here's the thing about golf: the swing happens in about 1.5 seconds. Your brain can't process what your body is doing in real-time. By the time the ball lands, you've already forgotten what your hands felt like at impact.
Sure, you could:
- Ask your playing partner (who's probably guessing)
- Record yourself and watch later (by which time you've hit 50 more shots)
- Pay for expensive lessons every week
Or... you could see your swing immediately after each shot.
Why I Built DelayCam
The concept is dead simple: you set up your phone to record, choose a delay (I use about 5-8 seconds for full swings), and then you can watch your swing replay right after you hit.
No scrubbing through video. No waiting. Just: swing, look up, watch yourself, adjust, repeat.
I originally built it for sports training in general. It works great for dancers, fitness enthusiasts checking form, and pretty much anyone who needs to see what their body just did. But as a golfer myself, I quickly realized how perfect it is for swing work.
How I Use It at the Range
My setup takes about 30 seconds:
- Phone on a cheap tripod behind me (down-the-line view)
- Open DelayCam, set delay to 6 seconds
- Hit balls and watch each swing automatically play back
The magic is in the immediate feedback loop. I can feel something in my swing, watch it happen, and connect the feeling to the visual. That connection is everything when you're trying to groove a new move.
It's Free, I'd Love Your Feedback
I made DelayCam available on both iOS and Android for free. As a golfer and the creator, I'd genuinely love to hear what you think and if there are features that would make it even more useful for your practice sessions.
