‘Stuff of Nightmares’ How Banner Elk Rebuilt After Hurricane Helene

After Hurricane Helene tore through the South in 2024, the tiny mountain town of Banner Elk, NC, was left reeling—none harder hit than the beloved Elk River Club. The storm’s path of destruction turned fairways into flood zones and clubhouses into rubble.

Over the past year, residents, club members and workers have banded together in true community spirit, painstakingly restoring greens, rebuilding facilities and breathing life back into this one-stoplight town—proof that even after the worst storms, people can rebuild better than before.
